Birthdays are back… at CASEing the Catty

A new catalogue means new inspiration and we’re back around to featuring Birthdays again at CASEing the Catty. My new birthday stamp set is still on its way to me so I’ve used an oldie, but still an awesome goodie, Amazing Birthday.

I chose to CASE the card below but substitute in a different stamp set and colour combo.

Have you ever chosen a colour combo simply because two of your inkpads were sitting next to each other and you thought they looked good together? That’s how this combo happened. I saw Cucumber Crush next to Blackberry Bliss and thought they were a perfect couple. I threw in some Pool Party as well to mellow things out.

Of course the end result is quite different but you can still see the sketch. And, you’ll never guess where those dots came from! I thought my card was a bit plain and needed some more ‘festive’. I was thinking confetti and searched for an appropriate stamp. The answer? The decorations/lights/dots stamp from Festival of Trees. Who says Christmas sets are only for Christmas?

Hip Hip Hooray for TGIF Challenges

There’s a new challenge in town and I was excited to join in for challenge number 1. The team is basically comprised of Artisan design team members, past and present, so the inspiration is pretty spectacular. The first challenge (#tgifc01) was very much a challenge for me! A colour challenge comprising of Calypso Coral, Pool Party and Crushed Curry. Calypso Coral and Pool Party are part of my favourite colour combo but throw in yellow and I’m, well a bit challenged. To me, the almost primary colours say party so I ran with that.

Lately I’ve been loving creating my own inky, messy backgrounds so for this challenge I used the faux watercolour backgrounds technique. It’s so easy and you get a great outcome every time. Check out a great video from Stampin’ Up! on this technique here.

Next I added in some fun party elements like a banner and balloons. To make the crazy, curly balloon strings, I tied on some cotton thread, wet it and then curled it around a paintbrush. Then I dried it with my heat tool and once dry, it stays curly. I didn’t adhere them to the card so as you can seee in the pictures, they’re all over the place from the wind. I love it!

Some sequins and a sentiment (I know… gasp) finished it off.

Then I had to create an envelope to match!

Inspire Create SHARE

It’s Leadership Day of the South Pacific Inspire Create Share convention. Hundereds of SU demos across Australia and New Zealand have flocked to the Gold Coast to learn, create and catch up with friends. Sadly this year, I’m not one of them. Earlier this year I made the decision to quit my job and with school fees to pay, this is just not the year for me. Of course I’m sad but thanks to social media, I still get to be part of the fun and even better, Stampin’ Up! is actually taping and posting videos of this convention online for the first time ever.

Something I do get to be a part of is a swap with the CASEing the Catty design team girls. I posted my swaps to a friend who is at convention, she’ll distribute them for me and send some lovely happy mail back to me.

I had a few week’s notice about the swap and I had a great idea. I tried it out but then had to wait until the Retirement List was released. It only gave me a few days to complete them but I couldn’t really see the point in making something that couldn’t be used in the coming year.

I actually think these swaps are one of the best projects I’ve ever made. I guess that’s a good thing! I should be growing and improving my style right? I think these are totally me! And I should do more of this style. It’s so fun!

Amazing colourful Birthday swap. Details @ www.thepapercaper.com.au. Stampin' Up! supplies: Amazing Birthday, Gorgeous Grunge, White StazOn, Crushed Curry, Island Indigo, Blackberry Bliss, Melon Mambo inks...Oh it makes my heart happy just looking at it. I cannot get enough of colour!

The stamp is on window sheet and stamped in White StazOn. This rests over the top of some watercolour paper which I splotched and spritzed with a stamp from Gorgeous Grunge, coloured ink and water. You have to do one colour at a time to avoid a big brown puddle so i used my heat tool because I’m impatient! When you spritz the next colour, it does revive the other colours a little so you do get just a little blending which is perfect.

The rest of the card is pretty straight forward. Add your favourite DSP strips and accessories. I jazzed mine up with some pinking shears – gotta stand out from the crowd! I also used just the gold strand from the Gold Baker’s Twine and it wouldn’t be right without some stitching. I used coloured thread for the first time on a card and I’m so glad I did. I think it’s perfect with the rest of the colour.

It’s my birthday and I’ll… CASE the Catty if I want to

Welcome to birthday week at caseingthecatty.blogspot.com.au. It makes the Type A in me thrilled that challenge Birthday week lined up with my own birthday! Now that you know that little tidbit, you’ll understand why I chose the projects I did to CASE this week.

Am I the only one that LOVES creating party decorations? I don’t think so. These days, most kids are celebrating every birthday with some type of party, be it big or small. I love that Stampin’ Up! makes it so easy to create party essentials so easily that any mum can be a star. There are supplies for making banners, cupcake picks, gorgeous gift wrapping ideas and my personal favourite – lolly bags! Hooray!

This week I was inspired by the lolly bags on page 44 of the (South Pacific) catalogue. I love how Stampin’ Up! have used a creative idea to make their sample bags – inking an embossing folder and stamping with that. I decided to use a similar idea but instead of stamping with an embossing folder, I used the eraser on the end of a pencil. My design was inspired by the stamp set Dotty Angles which is still on my wish list. Not to worry, you can create a similar effect with the pencil eraser. Simply ink it up and dot onto cello bags. To create the same effect, you’ll need to do lots of dots at the bottom of the bag and gradually spread them out. Of course, you could also create fun polka dot designs using the same ink and eraser method.

I then filled the bags with lollies and tied them up with various ribbons, some of which I korked in the oven (wind ribbon around a dowel, secure with pegs and bake in a VERY slow oven for about 30 mins). The Amazing Birthday stamp set supplied me with cute tags which I tied on with Baker’s Twine. I just love the suggested colour combo on page 45 for birthdays so I didn’t change a thing.

I was also inspired by the Mason jars on page 42 and made some different lolly ‘bags’. I was lucky enough to grab these tiny Mason jars from a school stall selling homemade relish (yes I bought 5 or 6 just for the jars). I used the banner stamp from Amazing Birthday and cut out the words and mounted them with foam Stampin’ Dimensionals. Yep, still lovin’ that colour combo – it just says HAPPY! The little lolly jar is actually a spice jar from IKEA. They are called RAJTAN Spice jars and come in a pack of 4 for just $2.49! I grabbed a box last time I was there not knowing what I would use them for but I think they suit this project perfectly! I used some Sweet Sadie washi tape around the lid and then stamped, punched and cut elements and layered for the outside of the lid. Did you notice I also stamped the jar with my eraser/ink method? When you use StazOn (white), you can stamp on just about anything!

Well, thanks for stopping by. Make sure you visit http://www.caseingthecatty.blogspot.com.au for more birthday inspiration and maybe even play along! I’m off to eat my lollies… because it’s my birthday… and I can!

P.S. Jess’s changing the world postscript: You may not have noticed but the lollies I’ve used for my bags are free from harmful chemical additives. We’re a low to no additive family because I’ve seen the difference additives make to my kids’ behaviour. They’re just regular kids but certain ‘numbers’ make them lose control of their behaviour, become hyperactive and fight more with each other, and who wants that?? We’re on a family journey (and we’re nowhere near food perfect) because it’s better for us all. If you’re interested in learning more about what is in the food we eat and what additives have been shown to cause, do a little Internet research. I started here http://www.fedup.com.au, http://www.additivefreepantry.com/ and here http://www.chemicalmaze.com 🙂 Look, you can still have lollies!
